About this novel
Mohabbat Aur Sakoon (Urdu: محبت اور سکون) by Usama Ansari is a short, complete Urdu novel about a rich young man searching for peace. He has love, friends and fame, yet doesn’t know what real peace of mind feels like, until he finds it in turning to Allah.
Usama Ansari opens with his own reflections rather than a scene. What is life, he asks? We all think there should be someone beautiful in our lives; whether we value them or not, that’s what we want. Yet when it comes to marriage, so many people suddenly remember their family’s izzat. If they cared so much about honour, he asks, why did they start the love affair in the first place? Love, he writes, is something that grows when two people respect each other.
He goes further, comparing people to a pond. As long as the pond is clean, the fish inside it are like kings; but if dirty fish are released into it, the whole pond turns murky, and people stop calling it a good pond. A wrong person is caught sooner or later, the writer warns, however hard they try to hide.
بیشک دلوں کا اطمینان اللہ کے ذکر میں ہے۔
He also praises dosti, calling a true friend a special blessing after one’s parents – someone who can lift a person from the dust to the sky, or pull them down. Then he introduces the story itself: it is about a man who never knew what sakoon was. He is the son of a wealthy family, proud of his money and fame, with three friends who mistake deceit for love. Asked about love, they laugh and say they talk about many loves. This young man finds his peace in singing, partying and teasing people – and the writer asks us to imagine the moment he finally bows his head before his Rabb, with tears in his eyes, the fear of God in his heart and a single dua on his lips – that is when he will know what true peace is.
The book reads partly as a story and partly as a heartfelt sermon, mixing romance with spiritual reflection. People often reach the real through the worldly, the writer says – and that idea runs through the whole novel. It’s a good choice for readers who like Islamic themes and lessons woven into a short story.
