About this novel

Panch Parmeshwar (Urdu: پنچ پرمیشور) is a classic short story by Munshi Premchand about friendship and justice in a village. Its title expresses an old belief: when a person sits as panch, a judge of the village council, God speaks through him. The story tests that belief with two close friends.

Summary of Panch Parmeshwar

Two friends

Jumman Shaikh and Algu Chaudhary have been close friends since childhood. They share everything, and their friendship is famous in the village, even though one is Muslim and the other Hindu.

The aunt’s complaint

Jumman’s old aunt (khala) has signed her property over to him on the promise that he and his wife will look after her. Once the property is his, they begin to neglect and insult her. The old woman takes her complaint to the village panchayat and asks that Algu be the head judge, the sarpanch. Jumman is delighted, sure that his best friend will rule in his favour.

Algu’s judgment

Sitting as judge, Algu feels the weight of his duty. He decides that Jumman must pay his aunt a monthly allowance or return her property. Jumman is shocked and bitter. He feels betrayed, and the long friendship breaks.

The second panchayat

Some time later, Algu sells one of his oxen to a cart-owner, Samjhu Sahu, who works the animal so hard that it dies, and then refuses to pay. Algu takes the case to the panchayat, and Samjhu chooses Jumman as sarpanch. Now Jumman has his chance for revenge. But when he sits in the judge’s seat, he too feels his responsibility, and he gives a fair judgment in Algu’s favour.

The ending

Afterwards Jumman embraces Algu. He understands at last why Algu ruled against him: in the seat of the panch, a person must forget friendship and enmity and speak only the truth. The two friends are reunited.
