Hui Jo Ulfat By Irum Tahir

About this novel

Hui Jo Ulfat (Urdu: ہوئی جو الفت) by Irum Tahir is a long, complete Urdu romance that opens in a lively, loving home with a spoilt, study-hating only daughter named Rida.

The first scene is a familiar one in many Pakistani homes. Nasreen is massaging oil into her daughter’s hair, grumbling about the “ghonsla” Rida has made of it, and lecturing her non-stop. Rida protests with her usual drama: “Uff Mama, you are so zalim! You force me to study all the time, and now you’re worried about my hair too – it’s perfectly fine and pretty.” For Rida, books have always felt like suffocation, and refusing to go to school or class over the smallest excuse has been her routine since childhood. Her father Taimoor, she knows, is usually on her side.

Rida was born six years after Nasreen and Taimoor’s marriage, and Taimoor has never left any wish of hers unfulfilled. Nasreen loves her just as much, but she does not believe in spoiling children and has always tried to raise Rida properly. Husband and wife see eye to eye on almost everything; the only time they argue is when the matter is Rida.

Rida has worked out the perfect method for getting her way: a few fake tears in front of her father, and Taimoor melts and makes promises, while Nasreen’s long list of advice gets heard with a smile and ignored. When Nasreen sighs that this girl finds every problem’s solution in quitting her studies, Rida proudly announces that she knows exactly why – Baba says she doesn’t like studying because student life never suited Mama either! Nasreen can only throw up her hands at the cheek of it.

Irum Tahir opens the novel with light, playful ghar ki nok-jhok and a heroine full of personality. The title, about a love that happened, promises that Rida’s carefree days will soon be touched by romance, and the warm family relationships make it an easy story to settle into.
