About this novel

Ik Sitara Kehkashan Ho Giya (Urdu: اک ستارا کہکشاں ہو گیا) by Bisma Khan is an Urdu family novel about Zara Aban, a confident girl with big plans. It opens on the morning of her last exam, and her plans for her own future are about to start an argument at home.

It opens with her mother, Shafaq Aban, calling up the stairs: this is the last paper, Zara, and after it you can sleep as much as you like. When she reaches the room she’s surprised to find her daughter, who never gets up early, already in front of the mirror giving her look its final touches. Zara has her reasons. It’s the last paper, and before it’s over she means to show “those monkeys” in her class that girls are not weak.

ایک خود مختار لڑکی، ماں کا ڈر، اور باپ کا بھروسہ۔

Downstairs at breakfast her Baba, Aban Sahib, asks what she plans to do after today. He’s the kind of father who respects his children’s wishes, and he tells her it will be as she wants. Her mother isn’t so sure. How can they send a girl away like that? Her heart won’t accept it. Zara answers that she wants to be independent, that times have changed and all girls go now. But before the argument can really begin she grabs her bag, promises to talk later, and drives off, because she still has to pick up her friends Mishi and Zari.

The first chapter ends with Mishi jumping into the front seat, complaining that Zara honks more than her own brother does, while they rush to collect Zari.

It’s a 314-page novel about ambition, family worries and finding your own place, with the title’s image of one star becoming a galaxy.
