About this novel
Usay Panay Ki Chah (Urdu: اسے پانے کی چاہ) by Ana Ilyas is a romantic Urdu novel about old university friends meeting again ten years later. One man has never stopped hoping to find someone he lost, and the story opens with an invitation to a university reunion.
Abeesha has just come home tired from the office when her sister Warsha bursts in with a beautiful invitation card. Their university is holding a get-together for everyone who did their master’s there ten years ago, Abeesha’s session included. Both sisters studied at the same university and both were scholarship holders: Abeesha in journalism, Warsha in botany. Today Abeesha works as an editor at a respected newspaper, and Warsha lectures in botany while working on her MPhil. For Abeesha, those university years were the golden period of her life, and the card brings all those memories rushing back.
دس سال بعد وہی یونیورسٹی، وہی یادیں — اور شاید وہی چہرہ۔
Far away, Ghazan gets a call from his friend Roman, who teases him about forgetting his own family and then tells him the news: the same reunion is coming up, and Ghazan has to drop everything, book a ticket and come home. Roman reminds him that his mother walks into his locked room just to touch his things, and that his sister Mana complains that he will never let her plan his wedding. Whenever his mother brings up marriage, Ghazan puts it off for another two or three years. The reason is something he hardly admits even to himself: he is still hoping that one day, somewhere, he will find a particular person again, and he isn’t sure whether he is chasing a sarab (a mirage).
Ana Ilyas writes about qismat as an unseen road. We run from a place, and Allah’s decision for us is waiting right there. The opening sets up a gentle, nostalgic love story built on memories and second chances.
